I don't think that many parents ask their teens if they plagiarize. I think if your parents did ask you that they are just concerned and interested in your learning. Don't take too much offense from it, just be glad they are asking!!

As a teachers, I can tell you that no, not all parents ask that question. The reason they ask, though, is that if a student does plagarize work, he/she will certainly fail the assignment, and depending on the institution, fail the course and get kicked out. The older you get, the heavier the punishment for stealing other people's words, without even bothering to try and change them, in any way. I've had students photocopy chapters of books and hand it in as their own work, encyclopaedias, too. If your parents ask, remember two things - you are luckier than a lot of students whose parents don't care enough about their kids to even check their work, and that they are preventing you from getting into serious trouble, even if it means preventing you from going out with friends in order to rewrite an assignment that you didn't spend any time doing.

If the language and phrasing seemed like something that was advanced for my child then I would ask. There are also websites where you can type in part of a paper and then see if it has been plagiarized. It will bring up the work from which it comes.
Many teachers require work to be turned in on disc so that they can just copy and paste and check for this type of cheating.

I would personally only ask my teen that if I read their paper and thought it sounded like they plagerized. Usually its not real hard to tell.

Its agest the law for one. You could go to jail. Well if the teen didn't do it, they won't get so upset. I think you know the rest.
