The ups are 3 hours from the moutains, 3 hours from the beach, warm to hot all year round.

The downs are sand, sand, and more sand, bugs, and an Army base in town - Ft. Jackson.

This tells nearly everything you'd want to know about Columbia.

It's wonderful, but you definitely need AC.
If your friend's home doesn't have it, maybe she'd pay to have you put a window unit into wherever you'd be sleeping.
Does your/her car have AC? If not...you're in for a hot and humid surprise.
