He wanted to find a trade route to the Indies so that trade would be quicker.

He did NOT want to prove the world was round. They already knew that the world was round. The agruement was over the SIZE of the world.

Columbus argued that the world was much smaller and he could travel around the globe in a short enough time.

As wikipedia.org says "No ship in the 15th century could carry enough food to sail from the Canary Islands to Japan. Most European sailors and navigators concluded, correctly, that sailors undertaking a westward voyage from Europe to Asia would die of starvation or thirst long before reaching their destination."

Christopher Columbus lucked out because the continents of North and South America were in the way.

Believing the world was round , which went against religious opinion at the time, he set off to find a route to the East Indies by traveliing West. He didn't account for a land mass to be in the way, which was the America's and he had mis calculated distances thinking the world to be smaller.
Instead he hit what we know as The Bahamas, he in fact died thinking that he had hit Asia.
Subsequently we call the area the West Indies.
