This is from my other question about how life is in Amsterdam.
I was planning to get an apartment in the city. If that is too much I am planning to find a small house somewhere in or outside the city. Last option I was thinking of is to maybe think about buying a store to make into a coffeehouse. (That coffeeshop maybe way into the future though)

Well, that would of course depend on what standard of living you have for yourself in mind. Basically if you make minimum wage in Holland you can get yourself a small apartment and have enough to live on, but you wouldn't have many extra's. Anyway gross minimum wage in Holland for a 23 year old is approximately 1250 euro's per month which is the equivalent of approximately 1600 US dollars. Income taxes would be around 20%. Amsterdam is very crowded and in my opinion dirty. It's an old historical town with so much to see. If you have children I would recommend living outside Amsterdam in one of the suburb towns. Amsterdam is furthermore a meltingpot of so many cultures. There are probably more than 150 nationalities present in this town. To buy a store or for that matter to start a business in this town is very expensive. The main reason is that housing is very expensive. You will need a good starting capital to even start thinking of opening up a store.

Renting an apartment in Amsterdam will cost you something starting at Eur800 per month. Depends on the location. You might want to start by looking outside of the city.

You mean a coffee place to drink coffee, or a coffee shop for dope? You can forget about the latter, as there are many and you won't get the permit as they are reducing it now....

Buying a place to start a shop -any shop- is also extremely expensive and you might consider renting a space.

For a simple flat you will pay a minimum of 500 euros per month (ex heating, water, electricity, phone, so add 200).

Basic expenses for food are about 20 euro per day.
You must have a health insurance if you work here, so add at least 100 per month to that.

Wish you good luck!

I think you can pretty much forget about opening a coffeeshop... It's all highly regulated now and the government/cities are trying to get rid of them all,... there's no way you're going to get a work permit if your plan is to open a coffeeshop...
