All animals, including humans, are driven by instinct to mate. Only when they reach sexual maturity does it manifest itself. So, they don't need to learn it. It's just that us humans get ourselves in trouble with it sometimes, but that's another story.

I think that a lot of it is instinctive to most animals - if it wasn't we would be extinct - we are the children of the ones that instinctively or quicly learnt how to do it :-)
However some people in each generation either do not listen or do not have instinct to reproduce. There were several cases of people brought up in strictly conservative background who did not know that they were meant to have sex to produce babies and did not know what sex was so never had it. They thought that lying next to each other in bed would make babies.
The other thing that we evolved is knowing what creatures we can have sex with to make babies - we have evolved all sorts of complicated rituals. Its not so much important in humans now we can talk but imagine in birds where several species may look similar.

Yes, mating is an instinct. This is why it's important to spay/neuter, smells and signals given by the female, prompts the male to mate with her..

Animals don't "learn" about mating. Its an instinctive behavior used to help their particular species stay afloat.

It is natural instinct, but also in the wild it is not a private thing like it is with humans. Babies see it, and try it due to curiosity and then they take it from there!
