Depends on your use. If you would like to travel with your computer, obviously a laptop is best. If you are mostly a home user, go with the desktop.

There are laptops that are being dubbed "desktop replacements". Its hard to achieve the upgradability of a desktop with a laptop, but these machines are equal in RAM, HDD space, and processor to the desktop machines.

Laptops are portable. If you frequently travel a lot or have to do work on field, then this is the appropriate PC for you.

The only thing - laptops are expensive. They are a hot target to thieves. Managing upgrades is costly. Unlike with the desktop, it's easy to install more memories (RAMS), new hard drives, and upgrade processors.

In my case, to get away from these expensive maintenance cost, I use my laptop along with an external DVD burner which I use to burn DVDs as I don't want to exhaust my laptop's built in drive. I also use an external Hard Disk. I make it a habit to free some space in my laptop and move them to my external HD as part of my regular maintenace activities.

I had a laptop as well as a desktop. I sold the laptop after only a week or so. I found I missed using the mouse. Sounds daft I know, but I found using the desktop was a lot quicker and better. Don't ask me why, it just was. What are you using now to send this question?

Get a desktop unless you need to use a PC when you travel. Something bad always happens to laptops, stolen, knocked off a counter, dropped, lost etc.

If you have a wireless router(or plan on getting one set up), I would go with the laptop, then you have the option of working anywhere in your house.

If you're on dialup or wired LAN I would go with the desktop, they are easier to upgrade. If you're going to be stuck in one place anyway there's no sense in the laptop unless you need to be able to carry your work around.

With that budget, I suggest going for a desktop. Size and price are inversely proportional.

You could check deals2buy.com or edealinfo.com on dell deals. Also check out gateway desktops, they usually have something to offer at lower price.

Stores like CompUsa/BestBuy/CircuitCity will have weekend or festival season deals on many desktops. Try brands like Acer / HP. I read a few days back that HP is trying to get bigger in to AMD chips. Their cost is less and hence their system price should reduce too.

it depends on what u want to do with it.If you like gaming then desktop ,if studying and working laptop.A desktop is easier to upgrade and laptop is more expensive to upgrade.Laptop is space saver , looks good and makes you look smart .It you decision , make a pro and cons table , or use mind maps why is better than the other

Depends what your uses are going to be.

PC's will have better specs, but Laptops are protable (I doubt anyone will carry their PC in their bag!?)
