If you're trying to define your music taste, you can check out auralgasms.com. It offers music clips for sampling, and is categorized with different music genres. If you find an artist you like, they offer a list of similar artists so you can start up your list of artist favourites.
Another thing you could do is go to Yahoo Music and listen to live radio, which is free. This gives you access to a lot of different types of music, without having to spend money at HMV...
