On my way haome from school today, I found a little caterpillar. That's pretty weird because I live in the city. Anyway, I want to give it to my science teacher on monday, (today is friday!!!) so I want to feed it before it kicks the bucket. I classified it, and I think it will become a monarch butterfly. (It has stripes of green, black and yellow) I've heard that they eat milkweed, but none grows anwhere around here, so what can I feed him/her? P.S. My mom suggested lettuce, is that ok?

P.P.S. I found it on my porch, but I don't think my landlord grows milkweed. ='( Either the mom was stupid or drunk at the time she layed the eggs. P.P.P.S. It's pretty big.

Oh my gosh! My mom gave him some lettuce and he likes it! I hope he doesn't die! I found he has something brownish-orange coming out of his rear end. Is he making a cocoon, or is he taking a nice BM?

if it isa monarch, there definitely are milkweed somwhere nearby, since the female only lays her eggs on that specific plants. go check where you found it, and you should indeed find some milkweed plants nearby, unless they were recently cut down by the person whose yard they were in. Check along back alleys and fences, you will find some somewhere. Unfortunately, the monarch only eats the milkweed. it may be a weekend project for you.

I googled it, and this guy at eNature.com says only milkweed will do. Try going back to the place where you found him; maybe you'll see some there.

I don't know much on butterflies or caterpillars, but i would assume that it eats whatever leaves you found it crawling on or near. I would put leaves from several different kinds of trees and plants you found it near. Then, whatever it seems to feed on is your winner.

They eat leaves ... and people .... so unless you want it to eat you and everyone in your family give it some leaves ...

Also if it is a male caterpillar you may want to find a female caterpillar so that it can have some fun this weekend ... If it is a female caterpillar she will be fine with the food.
