MOTHBALLS are extremely Poisonous!!
i'm presuming that Ur motor is either On water, In water, or NEar water; so mothballs would be very dangerous, not only to U, but to the water: poison travels!!
there are very few things that will keep a snake out of an attractive space - but why would Ur motor be attractive? are U sure the snake is actually returning? or was it just a one-time thing?
try offering an alternative hidey-hole:
a) a slab of rock, like slate, over a slanted hole in the ground, big enuf to accomodate the snake;
b) a hunk of tree-trunk with the center rotted out, sitting on the ground;
c) a rock-pile or brush-pile, big enuf to provide shade and cover from predators.
snakes are very valuable parts of local ecology; they are beautiful, and much needed predators. please treat Ur visitor well!

You can use garlic & mothballs etc. till you're blue in the face. They DON'T work, EVER!!! Seal the motor case with duct tape to keep it out. There's really no reason for the snake to try & use your engine for a hideout.

Garlic, moth balls, rolled up wire mesh.
Only give him a short term lease.
Or keep rasing the rent.
We had a guy who was a snake too and I know what you mean!
