I agree. Before asking questions in Yahoo Answers, various Forums, etc; a little research should be done. It's as simple as going to Yahoo Search, Google, etc and just typing your question. You'll find the pages with the keywords. Then if there's no good results, or further assistance is required, ask for help elsewhere (like Answers, Forums, etc)

A lot of the questions I see here(especially in the computers & internet section) are asked by people who aren't computer literate enough to use a search engine correctly, and they would very likely spend hours sorting through all the extraneous hits to find their answer.

Those of us who are computer savvy may very well be able to find that answer in less than a minute flat if it's something we don't already know. That doesn't mean everyone can or should be expected to do the same. There are some who just don't "get" computers or the internet and never will, but it's become a pretty much required resource in our modern society wether everone understands it or not. If they don't understand it, they are going to have questions. And they probably won't instinctively know how to find the best answer for themself. Google is my homepage personally, and I make liberal use of it. That's not for everyone.

I don't mind answering questions easily answered by google(which I would say is 90% of the questions I see). If it saves a non-savvy some frustration, why should it be irritating? I don't come here for the points, I come here to help people that ask for help. But that's just me.

Some questions you can't find on a search engine. Some question require an opinion rather than a definitive answer.

I't hard to say, Doreen, but I think that a Message Board like this is more friendly and "human" than the sterile, academic, prose you find on a Search Engine.
Judging from many of the replies, I think a lot of people are answering with their tongues very firmly in their cheeks.

because when you use the search engine to much comes up and you don't want to go through all those pages when you ask a question here and get a fast response

Haven't you just asked your own question - your asking a question now! Yahoo answers is quick and gets the information you want - search engines aren't always the correct site...

Because it feels great to be able to help someone that you do not know. That makes it worthwhile. But you can still use search engines as well, to check the answers given.

My reason is this: I like 'talking' to people, even though they don't know me. I don't have many friends, and sometimes I feel quite lonely. So by asking questions and reading people's answers, at least I know someone cares about helping me (even if they just want the 2 points).

we have young children in the home who are learning the computer at school. you would not believe some of the things they found (some accidentally) while playing with the search engine. now only mommy's computer has google and yahoo.

and i think some of it is boredom, curiosity, etc. i don't do homework for people on here....but will research things that interest me also....is just fun. this site has replaced Freecell in my world. i love it.
