I had been teaching in the inner city for 7 years. The first full year I was there, a kid accused me of hitting her, which was a lie, and the principal went after me with full out vengeance. That was her chance! That principal had been gone for a few years, but they replaced her with a woman who became a principal so she could make more money but hide in her office all day and not have to deal with children. There wasn't too much discipline before she showed up, there was even less now. As an example, two first graders set fire to a trash can that is chained to a railing just outside one of the entrances to the school during the day sometime. They didn't get so much as yelled at let alone suspended, expelled, or have the police make some notes. That is like broadcasting to the rest of the students "Do whatever you want. Nothing will happen." And they did.
I listened all year to the teacher down the hall yell so much that she would often have a sore throat. One or another in that class destroyed a Christmas tree that they decorated, pulled books and stuff off shelves in a rage, attacked other students...I could go on and on.
The other third grade teacher couldn't control a good class let alone this mob. So, since I had the reputation of being able to control difficult classes, I got stuck with this scary mob of kids.
I just couldn't take it any more! I only had them for four days and one talk to invisible people while I taught, another didn't have her meds for Oppositional Defiance Disorder, I had another one of these kids three years ago in second grade (Do the math.) and he still couldn't read, another had an adult to sit next to him who got paid to stop him from doing "bad" things but she actually had earplugs in so she could study her college course work and never said a thing to this kid until I said something.
The final straw was when I was on my cell phone with another kid's grandmother for the fourth time in three days. I bought my cell for just this purpose since the discipline was so bad in this place. The principal came in while I was doing this and when I explained why I was on the phone, she didn't say a word! Nothing! To him or the class. I knew for sure, then, that I would get no help with this bunch.
I had started taking home personal teaching aids that I had bought but couldn't use and before I knew it, I was cleaning everything out and running for my life! I was out on paid sick leave till January and in March they told me I either had to go back or quit. I quit. I couldn't go back there and deal with those kids or the staff who I had thought were my friends who weren't speaking to me because I left.
That job was hell on earth and I still have friends who do it every day.Sorry my answer is so long, but you still can't imagine how bad it was. I still have nightmares, three years later. Thanks for letting me vent.

I left because I had been at my job for 5+ years, and I was ready for something new, plus I was having knee surgery and didn't know how long it would take me to recover (it ended up taking a month and a half!!), plus I needed a job that would work with my college schedule and let me work part time! I'm glad though cuz I found a job that is awesome and pays better!

I got offered a better job with more pay...I had a good history at my last job, so if I didn't like the new job, I was welcomed to go back...I'm still at the job I left there for!
