I have a 1997 Honda Civic and always give it a little gas when I turn the key. Some one told me that it was bad for the car to do that since it has fuel injection, but I don't know why or if it is even true?

Bad? Not really harmful, but totally unnecessary with fuel injectors. Your injector pump engages immediately when the starter is engaged. The older engines equipped with carburetors needed a "kick" or two to work the accelerator pump.

Fuel injected engines do not require this.. only carburated vehicles require pumping the excellerator to start the engine. You could in-advertantly flood the engine. This makes it harder on the starter because it has to turn the engine over more to start it up. Also the injector system is set so that the proper amount of fuel is injected in the cylinder at the right time. If more fuel is dumped in to the cylinders, this could cause premature wear to the engine.....The excess fuel washes the oil off the cylinders so there is a dry start, which causes the wear.

On Electronic Fuel Injected vehicles, they have a higher volume fuel pump and are Electronically controlled system with various sensors that the computer reads and then it sends signals to the fuel management system for optimal fuel/air ratio mixture. Until the vehicle is at optimal running temperature, the system stays in a "closed loop" state that is pre-progreammed for more fuel for starting. So normally it would not be advised to apply your foot on the gas pedal in older vehicles that are mechanical, but on the newer systems that ARE electronic, all you are doing is sending a signal to the computer saying that you want to go "Faster". Until the vehicle actually starts, The computer will control fuel volume on most systems while starting. So when you turn your key into the "On" or "start" positions, it turns the fuel pump on and "charges" or in other words, puts fuel in all the fuel lines, fuel injectors, and pressurizes the fuel system.
Once vehicle gets to normal operating temperature, the Electronic System go's into "Open Loop" and now manages the engine according to various signals recieved by the sensors for better fuel efficiency and running operation.

It's not necessarily bad but could cause your engine to flood. You shouldn't have to touch the pedal to start the car. If your doing this because that is the only way it will start I'd change the fuel filter. And get the throttle body cleaned. And put some good injector cleaner in every 3 fill ups. I recommend Lucas fuel injector cleaner. One bottle will last for about 6 fill ups because you only use 1 ounce for every 10 gallons of gas,And they have quart and gallon sizes

Most newer cars do not require you to pump the gas to get started.
You should be able to just turn on the ignition and start the car. The only thing bad that can happen is flooding the engine, then it will not start.

Doesn't make a bit of difference one way or the other! It's "fuel injected" -done through a pump that applies x-amount of pressure upon starting!

There's no need because it is fuel injected. When the engine is at idle you just let the engine reach its normal working temperature (between 80-90 degrees celsius)before moving.

The only problem with that is that you are revving it up before the oil gets to the top of the motor and some parts may run without lubrication before the oil gets there.

giving it gas doesnt do anything. your fuel regulator valve is what lets the gas thru to the injectors in which they disperse the fuel to the cylinder head.

You shouldn't touch the gas pedal when starting because the computer control of your engine will automattically adjust your idle when starting.
