Commonly, cities are referred to as "urban heat islands." This nickname comes from the fact that cities are commonly hotter than adjacent rural areas. Cities are paved with large amounts of asphalt that are dark in color. Dark colors have a low albedo, or reflectivity. This means that dark colors do not reflect the energy from the sun, they absorb the energy. If you have a city primarily made from asphalt and dark metals, they will absorb more sunlight than a rural area with lots of grass, trees, etc.

No scientific answer here, but I think it's because of all the concrete and asphalt which absorbs the heat, yet holds the heat close to the surface. It seems only sand will do the same. Normal dirt will not feel really hot like a paved road on a hot day.

city is characterized by buildings & pavement. These surfaces retain the solar radiation longer compare to the coutryside (which is grassy or forested)
therefore, the weather in the city is hotter (even in the winter)

Because of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere, there would be a greenhouse effect thus causing a city to be hotter than the countryside!
