Americans love French people.... we just don't understand why the French give up so easily......

American perception is that French people don't like Americans (the reverse of what you feel). We feel that we bailed your butts out of 2 world wars... but when we travel to France to experience your incredible culture/food/history/art, we are looked down upon and not appreciated or tolerated. Worse, we feel looked down on for not speaking French.

Here is where I change tones...

In some respects, the French have good reason to act this way towards Americans. In the first place, American's have forgotten (or are too ignorant to know) that the French saved our butts in the American Fight for Independence (1770's). Without Lafayette and his naval blockade and assistance, the British would have been victorious. History would be vastly different.

Back to the language thing: We American's would be so intolerant and unhelpful if a French person came to America and spoke no English. How many diners or police officers in podunk USA have a waitress tha can understand enough French to take an order from a Gaul (look it up), or give directions to the Interstate in understandable French? And wouldn't we American's think, "Sheesh, couldn't he have leanred a little English before coming over here? he knew he was coming to an English speaking country, right?!" Yet we do not apply the same standards to ourselves. We expect a the desk clerk of a small chateau near Bordeaux to understand us when we ask for a room with a view of the vineyard.

So, it goes both ways. Better to learn a little about the culture/language one is planning to visit to make the experience that much more complete.

I believe that many Americans are disappointed that France is so non-committal on almost every resolution that comes up at the U.N. If France is to remain as a top member of the security council, they need to start being more decisive.

Additionally, many Americans believe that France should support us more when times are tough. We bailed them out in the world wars. That should count for something.

However, I personally thank France for its support during the American Revolution. Without France's help, we probably wouldn't have gained our freedom from England for several more years.

Thanks, France.

Generally, people I know see the French as passivist, who will not fight for any cause even their own defense. In contrast Americans are raised to believe we are invincible and indoctrinated as children to embrace military superiority and to never give up. I can not imagine Americans accepting their country being occupied by a foreign power the way France did when they were invaded in WWII. If that happened here the entire population would most likely fight to the death.

Individually there's no problem. Politically, to keep peace in the world, there are 2 options. One is to refuse to trade with countries who instgate trouble, and the other is to go to war with them. The French government won't abide by sanctions and continue to trade with our enemies, forcing us to fight. Russia and China do this also. Then we are perceived as the aggressors in the world. Is there another option for keeping peace?
