Well first thing is to make sure that your cd drive is actually a burner and not just a regular cd player. Second this is to make sure you bought cd-rw discs and not dvd-r or dvd+r discs. Last thing is to open up your burning program and just try it. Also if you have two drives make sure you put the disc in the burner and not the regular drive.

If you are running win xp and you are trying to copy something to a cdrw is stores the saved files to a temp area to then be written to a cdrw. When the cdrom tray opens place a cdrw in label side up, if it has a label. Then you should see an option you have files waiting to be written to a cd (((balloon))) bottom right corner. Clicking on the balloon will bring up a new window with your files on the right side. these are the files you are going to copy to a cd.
on the left side pane, look for CD writing tasks. Click on write the files to cd. and thats it.

Just put the CD in with nothing open. It should prompt you with a window and choose the blank folder. From there drag whatever you are looking to burn into the folder. When finished hit "burn to cd" on the right menu. Hope this helps

Well, firstly ensure you have a cd burner, not just a cd rom drive. I'm sure you do, but have to state it.

Secondly, for CD-RW's you probably have to format/initialize it first.

Your cd burning utility should have a format option. In Nero, for example, I can launch Nero StartSmart, then under Extras, select "Erase CD". After it's erased/formatted, you should be able to access it.

back up files on to a cd(r) & cd(rw) cd's

1 put in a cd (rw) in the
cd(rw) drive
then right click on the cd(rw) drive click on explorer then put the files in a folder you want to back up on to cd(rw) then name the folder my back up files 1 then
right click on that folder then click on copy
then go back to the cd(rw) drve , open window
in in it right click and click on paste
then at the top of the cd(rw) drive
click on file / write these files to cd
then click on ok
then your cd(rw) will burn the files on to the cd(rw) disc ,
now cd(r) you can back up files on to this cd but there on there for good but with a cd(rw) disc you re remove then
now all (dvd) blank ,cds if you want to back up files on to them you have to have a burning software ,you can download neor 7.2 . that will burn all files on to all (dvd) cds
hear is a list of the cds and what they do remember dont buy dvd- & dvd+ coz your dvd drive may not support them dvd cds the dvd- & the dvd+
