If you live on campus, you'll have no worries. The campus is beautiful and very safe. Outside of campus is a little rough, but it's nothing that is unlike other big cities. Good luck on going Ivy!

Philly is way under-rated. I consider myself, perhaps not modestly, a wordly person. I have lived in Paris, London, and Washington DC. Philly has a lot to offer. The museum is world class. The colleges rival Boston, Penn (hope you get in), Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, Drexel, etc... The hospitals and docs are tops. Children's is the top in the nation. Philly has the number one rated restaurant in the USA according to Michelin, "Le Bec Fin." There are many other great restaurants. The shoppiing for clothing is great, and there are no taxes on clothing. To live around Penn, on campus, will be lots of fun, but expensive. Still, you should do it to get a feel for the university life. Other neighborhoods to browse and go out in are Rittenhouse Square/Center City, Old City, the Italian Market, South Street (once or twice, it's rather yucky but a must), and Manayunk (a little out of the way). Fairmount Park is either the first or second largest park in an urban area in the US. Great concerts always, good live music starts in Philly. And, don't forget, you'll only be an hour and a half from NYC. The architecture in and around Philly is fabulous, and City Hall (where I worked) is the oldest in the country. Yes, there is crime, but it is no worse than Washingon DC. Be careful at night, in dark streets, in places where there's not a lot of people. Avoid going further West in Philly than your campus, and avoid North Philly.

The largest problem with the University City area is University City High School, with groups of teenage thugs just running around being punks. It's like anywhere else though--if you use your head and don't do/say/go anywhere you shouldn't be, you'll be fine. Don't walk around at night with headphones on, and take full advantage of the Penn Shuttle. The UPenn campus is beautiful, pretty self-contained and canvased by a reliable security force. They just can't be everywhere all of the time though, like anywhere else.
Also, this is the U. City portion of a City blog...http://www.phillyblog.com/philly/forumdisplay.php?f=30
You could also get some more accurate opinions and descriptions in there.

I lived there at Penn for 8 years and loved it. You will have to live in university housing for your freshman year anyhow, so this gives you a save haven while you look into other neighborhoods. Many students move towards the west a little bit, and I like the area of 40th to 44th and from Chestnut to Pine. The closer to 40th and Pine in this square, the better. The Rittenhouse area is nice, also, but it's kind of a hike to campus sometimes.
I doubt the crime is any worse than any other major city. Much of what you see on the news is drug-related. I mean, if you don't pay your pusher, he gets mad and starts to shoot you.

Philadelphia it what you make it and what you want to experience. The city has somuch to offer and somany sights to see, you would have alot to do. Yes the crime is bad but don't be stupid and you will be ok. Philadelphia is also located in a good spot ' being you can travel to lots of good place in only about an hour. With hundreds of events and shows in and around the area you would have a great time. But it would all depend on how much you want to get explore, what is out there.

True it does has high crime rate around the Philly and New Jersey area. The city is still a nice place to stay, but make sure that you find a suitable neighborhood that is not full of bullet holes. That goes for wherever you may go in the U.S.
Good Luck!

ehhhh Philly is a pretty icky city. They really should do more to cut down on the crime as it is sad to see one of the most historically rich cities in Pennsylvania being let go.
