Assuming you have a gas or an electric edger, you go forward, or push the edger. The guide on your edger should run along between the sidewalk and the grass.

I have a gas "Echo" trimmer. I push the blade along side the walkway. The blade turns clockwise and that causes the least resistance. If I pull it through, it cuts much better. I guess because you are pulling against the turn of the blade. If the area is really bad, I usually pull it back and forth and clean out the grass real good. Of course it is easier to push it. Have fun!!!!
