Your point about weight gain and loss is well taken. But you must remember that the 14% guideline proceeds from the assumption of averages. It's relatively accurate, too – for both living males and females. A skeleton that has been bleaching in the desert sun for two years weighs less than it did when it was part of a living organism. The fellow who weighed over 1,000 pounds surely did not have a skeleton that weighed over 140 pounds. The 14% guideline can be used with a normal weight/height chart for humans and yield relatively accurate results, but it does not allow for dramatic weight variations or missing limbs, and so on. As with all things, anomalies won't fit into a formula – this includes people with inordinately large, strong bones, and people with slight, frail bones. It also doesn't work for very old people who suffer from certain bone disorders.

The human skeleton weighs about 14% of the total body mass.
There for a 180 pound human's skeleton will be 25 lb (180 * 0.14)
