the mom, girl, and cop DIED before they entered the town. Everyone in the town is dead, but all suffering thru some kind of hellish limbo at the hands of the girl in the hospital bed. This only comes to an end when the girl in the hospital bed is allowed (by acts of the mom and girl and cop) to finalyl have her revenge on the people who harmed her. Now that thats all done and over, the mom and girl go home, but they are DEAD and in a world paralell to the world of the living. The dad, free of his wife and kid baggage, goes on to lead a happy life as a rich single swinger

Contrary to popular belief, no, Rose and Sharon are not dead. They're just still trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension. Here's what happened:

There are three parts of Alessa:

- Alessa (the original body)

- Good Alessa (Sharon)

- Dark Alessa ("The Demon")

Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically physical manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these physical manifestations (and the alternate dimensions), it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (possibly telekinetic and/or psionic powers, which would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch). Assuming this is true, the ending goes as follows:

1) Dark Alessa (aka - "The Demon") does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon. Dark Alessa simply recombines with Good Alessa (Sharon), creating a new "reincarnated" Alessa.

2) Alessa's deal with her evil counterpart is not simply that she will help her exact her revenge, but that she will also be granted a new life with a better mother: Rose.

3) In this case, ending has two possibilities:

a.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. However, because Alessa was motivated by hate and revenge and let her evil side take over (as well as Rose's part in the revenge), Rose and Sharon (Alessa #2) are doomed to live in the purgatory-like realm that Dark Alessa created. Therefore, no one really wins.

or

b.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. Now with Sharon's memories to work with after reuniting with her, Alessa can extend her sphere of influence and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want Rose to leave her alternate dimension; she wants to keep Rose all to herself.

Hope this helps. :)

Here is the conclusion I came to. When you read the back of the movie it says something about the daughter and something either about mental problems or psychosis or something. Anyways, I came to the conclusion that the mother AND the daughter both had mental problems and that they both entered a world all their own. Because part of the movie also shows the husband of the mother in the SAME area she is in and she is in a horrible ash filled city and the father is in a clear quiet area. And at the end I think that she was imagining things like her daughter was. So everything the daughter and mother were seeing was in their mind and the husband didn't see anything. And honestly I think the ending the mother and daughter were dead. They were seeing him in the house, but he could not see them, BUT feel their presence. I hope that helped a bit.

Yeah its confusing, you'd have to play the game series to fully understand it. In Silent hill 1 w/ Harry Mason, Dahlia states that when you enter silent hill, you will forever wander in the formless chaos, or quagmire. Everybody who enters silent hill in its alternate reality, has a direct link to Alessa. And no, they did not die... Alessa manifest her dreams into reality. They were really experiencing this.

The girl was already dead. The Mom died but was reunited with the girl at the end. They were basically ghosts when they entered their house. The father felt their presence, but couldn't see them.
