There is a black spider with yellow on legs approx. 1.5-2" long when legs are expanded. I live in Clarksville TN, (on the border of KY). I am from CANADA and am not familiar with the spiders in the area. What do I do? I have a baby and a small dog. Its got a long web from my back deck to my bathroom window. I have arachnophobia.

OK I went to another window in my house to look out at it. Its yellow & black and definitely 2" or so long. The "impressive" thing about it is its zig-zagged web. I believe that it is an Argiope aurantia. Has anyone had any of these in their yards? What did you do?

That sounds like a banana spider. They are pretty common, but not really all that poisenous. They are VERY icky though.

If you go to the site below, you should be able to find what type spider you have. Its probably a Golden Silk Orb Weaver.
Are they dangerous:
However, as is typical with most spiders, there is little real danger from an encounter with the golden silk spider. The spider will bite only if held or pinched, and the bite itself will produce only localized pain with a slight redness, which quickly goes away. On the whole, the bite is much less severe than a bee string.

type out the description of your spider in an image search engine. Then, click on the pic that looks the closest to your spider and read about it. that's what i do when ever i encounter and feel a need to determine whether or not something is dangerous enough to kill for the sake of my children.
I like spiders and snakes and think they do more good than harm for the most part. so i like to be sure it actually poses a threat before i kill it

Get some spray and spray from a distance. Get broom and knock web down. If you see a lot of them, call exterminator. You are close to military base in Clarksville, Call 101 air borne to smash it for you. My first cousin is in Clarksville, she can come over and smash it. Tell your husband we appreciate his service in the military.

garden or banana spider...neither is a danger to you.

Both can be offed with wasp or bee spray, if you really want them gone....

If not, it's tons of fun to catch a cockroach and whip it into the web. Those things move like jackrabbits when there's blood in the water.

Sounds like what my husband calls a garden spider. They look HUGE to me (I am arachiphobic, too.) but he says they are harmless.
