today in my social studies class, my teacher was talking about egypt, i live in the north east, one of the less-ignorant places in the USA, and i swear, nearly 1/2 of the people thought egypt was near russia. By the way, i am in the above-average group

Hey well i teach international politics to undergraduate students in England at a good university.
I have had students in tutorials tell me that the US is full of jews and that jews go to syllabubs!
Sometimes i do dispair.

The kids of today don't need to think, they have video games and TV to worry about! Who cares where egypt is what does that have to do with what was on Buffy last night?

Feel good about yourself, you're not a slaker. As for the rest of your class when report cards come in, you'll be the only one smilling! :)

Add note: Wow those NY Teashers where stupied. I still say tv and vodeo games are a big part of the problem. But having teacher that can't teach sure a heck isn't helping out the kids!

You can make it stop! Carry a sign around with a map that clearly shows the location of Egypt. This will make everyone more curious about what's on your sign then they'll ever be about anything in social studies class. As a bonus, you will have discovered that you CAN make a difference in the world.

Well, Egypt IS outside the US you know, so it doesn't count. (being sarcastic, in case you didn't get it). I find the Americans are not interested in anything unless it has a direct influence on the US. I found it quite amusing recently to read a joke that the only way the US govt can teach geography to it's people is go to war with a country so that CNN will put the map on TV all the time and people will know where it is....

I think what the teachers are teaching, and how the kids are accepting it, is not as good as it use to be.

I saw on TV and school district in NY was having problems with the kids failing the exams at the end of the year. They decided to test the teachers also (Of course that pissed the teachers off).

Like 80 % of the teachers failed the test.

Yeah adults are dumber than us though...on an on line survey most people didn't know where Oklahoma was....Some one in my class thought Hawii was a part of mexico, in 7th grade I had a fight with my teacher that Alaska was bigger than texas....she didn't believe me until two weeks later, when we looked up the square miles of both.

There is no place in the US that is more or less stupid. Most of the population is that way. You will just have to get used to it.
