It stood for YEAR 2000.

Had to do with the year and how it was entered in Databases and the changes that had to be made to accomodate the new century. People were worried it was the end of the world, etc...silly...I suppose they'll be a Y3K someday...but maybe people will be smarter by then...one can hope.

Y2K was the term used to describe the moment in time when the world clocks turned to midnight entering into the new millenium, that is from 1999 to 2000. It was believed that many computer programs written earlier than year 2000 to be using last two digits for the year, so when the year turns 2000 the last two digits being 00 could trigger confusion as it would be same value for example on year 1900, this may cause undesirable events even shutting down airports, trains etc.
Companies laid migration plans to ensure all computer programs and software were properly checked. I dont believe it can happen again although computer problems are here and will remain with us until we use them.

Fear or the world technology stopping and grinding the world to a hault. Or really y 2 k had alot to do with is programming and dating error for computers and other technology. Instead of build a date box like this 01/01/2001 it was built like 01/01/01. The fear was if not fixed technology would crash maybe because they treat it as 1901. It most likely really would have cause some problems and system shut downs but not as bad as folks feared.

Can it happen again? Not for a 93.2 years in the exact way, but something like it could alot sooner. At this point we have grow in our dependance of tech even since 1999. Computers and micro processors are getting into about everything we do and have. My real fear is a super computer virus. There could be one that not only find a hole in microsoft and mac but all operating systems - a virus that could evolve. Sounds like Sci-fi stuff? Well 30 years ago no one would have believed that you could be on the internet and post a comment for the entire world to see in seconds.

Y 2 K was the big scare in 1999 that when the year flipped to 2000 the computers wouldnt recognize the last two didgets and assign them to 2000. it would refer back to 1900. Or instead of 2001 it would be 1901. Everybody thought the computers would freak out and that it would shut down everything run by puters. Banks med records, etc.
Y stood for year, and 2K was for 2000.

Y2K MEANS THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND. I DOUBT IF THIS WILL EVER COME AGAIN. Y2K MEANS 2000 YEARS AFTER JESUS WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS. THE COUNTING OF THE YEARS WILL INCREASE AS THE YEARS GO ON. OF COURSE, EXCEPT IF THERE IS RAPTURE AND THE WORLD COME TO AN END, ANOTHER JESUS WAS BORN AND ANOTHER 2000 YEARS COME TO PASS, WHICH WILL BE VERY IMPOSSIBLE

ahhh no. It means year 2000- pretty sure that's over :-)

It never technically did happen, everyone was all scared that when the year 2000 came that bank and company software with automatic dates in them would revert to data from 1900 and we would loose millions of dollars and important records. But, it didn't. We were fine, and will always be fine.
