I can't get the tension adjusted correctly.

You need to make sure the both the thread from the bobbin and the one from the spool both have the same amount of tension on them. Pull each by hand and see if one is easier to pull than the other. Adjust the tension accordingly. The bobbin has a small screw on the side where the thread comes out. That's the bobbin tension adjustment. Tighten the screw for more tension, or loosen it for less.

Look at the stitch. If the looping (messed up stitches) are on the top, it's the bobbin tension that's off. If the looping is under the fabric, adjust the tension for the thread from the spool.

I had a singer and had the same problem...bought a BROTHER brand and it works really well! maybe you need a new machine
