Yawning can be for several reasons, but it does equalize air pressure on both side of the eardrum by opening the eustachian tubes and allowing air to pass into the inner ear. If you are going up a mountain in your car and start to get an uncomfortable feeling in your ears it is because the air pressure outside your eardrum is falling while the pressure inside the eardrum is remaining constant. If you yawn, the pressure will be equalized and the uncomfortable feeling will immediately cease. Same thing coming back down the mountain.

There have been a number of hypotheses for the reason why people yawn, including regulation of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood, or temperature regulation in the body, but none of these have ever been proven.
