Put everything in the dishwasher once and put it on the hot program...Tell them to open it once it has finished washing...(You could program it to wash in early morning hours, so it will finish just before they get up), When they see the steam coming out, and everything so clean you could see your face in it, they'll change their minds!
I have family in Mexico, and they have had dishwashers for years...so, as you say...it's a question of opinions!

Things washed in cold water will be clean, if enough detergent and "elbow grease" are used.. so don't worry about your kids getting sick from the dishes!

Try the hot dishwasher trick...It should work...A friend of mine here always said a dishwasher was a waste of money, then she went on a trip, and stayed at an apartment with a completely equipped kitchen...As soon as she came home, she went out and bought a dishwasher!

If worse comes to worse...Tell them...

"No sean del año de la polka, un lavavaajillas es lo mejor que hay. El agua casi hirviendo desinfecta todo lo que toca, eso no lo hace el agua fría!"
:-)
(By the way, I have a dishwasher, but what I wash by hand I do with water so hot it nearly burns my hands - we have solar panels for our hot water!)

Hot water. The only thing I wash in cold water are colored clothes. I just don't feel like anything is clean if I use cold. I even mop my floors with hot water. I'm probably the only person in the world that soaks their dishes in hot soapy water, to get all the nasty stuff off the dishes, before I put them in the dishwasher and just run on the short cycle. I can be sure I won't have any dirty dishes left at the end of the cycle that way. I don't know if it's my dishwasher or what but I had so many dishes not getting cleaned I just got tired of it. Plus it gets the grease off and I don't have to worry about changing the dish water or rinsing like I would if I just used my sink. I know I'm weird. My husband tells me that all the time.

Well they're right about the dish washer not getting the dishes all the way clean, but you should always wash your dishes in hot water - it kills alot more germs. Maybe in Mexico their water doesn't run hot so they just use what they have, but if they have a stove, they could heat their water that way. I wonder how they take their showers, in cold water too? I seriously doubt that! I'm just saying that they have ways to heat their water and washing dishes in cold water, as a result of not having hot water, is no exception. Use hot water.

Hey, no joke my son-in-laws from Mexico and he does the same thing and says the same thing. I also have a dishwasher & before we got it everyone stayed sick all the time but once we got our dishwasher it seems no one gets sick. So, I'm with you on this. My daughter has even explained this to her husband but he still washes them in cold water. He says because he's mom done it this way and no one got sick. Good Luck. He's starting to use the dw some now but not much.

You wash dishes in hot water. Hot water is more likely to kill bacteria that may be thriving on the dishes. Cold water gives them a light shower

You are right. Wash dishes, glasses and utensils
in hot water. When we did not have a dishwasher, we
used to boil water and pour it over the washed utensils.

I wish you good luck with resolving this problem.

Hot, hot , hot, Cold will promote bacteria growth! A capfull of bleach in the dishwasher does a great job also. Another good thing to try in the dish washer is a capfull of oxyclean. Works wonders

Use whatever feels good on your hands. The hot water you use isn't hot enough to kill anything that may be living on your plates. Sounds like your dishes get cleaned fairly regularly, so I wouldn't worry. Its not as though they sit in the sink for a week and start growing mold!

Use very hot water and wash in dishwasher. Sometimes a dish will need a little prewash but most don't. If washing by hand use very warm water but not so hot it burns your hands.

Defiantly "HOT" water. Cleans much better. If they rinse off the dishes before they put them in the dishwasher, that will help. The dishwasher wasn't made to clean dishes covered in leftover food. It would also clog the drain.
