if you chose not to go to college because you couldn't afford it, you deserve respect for having been smart enough to go out & work, saving up to study later, by your own bootstraps. no one has a right to put you down. you had pride and self-respect.
assuming you chose to work first, instead of go to college, because you found it necessary to discover yourself first, know what you want to do with your life...nothing wrong with that, either. a lot of people before you have done that and have come out much better, more mature, and better grounded students.
i think the question you're really asking yourself is: does your opinion of yourself depend so much on what you think others think of you?
it's normal to be affected by what or how others see or think of us, but i don't think it's healthy to let all that affect our self-esteem to the extent that we weaken in our resolve, erode our self-esteem and, eventually, lose faith in ourselves.
we can etheir use others' opinion of us for us to re-examine ourselves honestly, rediscover our strengths and confront our weaknesses..or we can yield to peer pressure, allow their opinion to weaken our resolve and stop us from doing what we believe is right by and for ourselves.
often, it is we alone who have to cope with our realities, and we always try to cope as best and as honestly as we can, sometimes defying conventions, peer pressure or expectations. because it is our life, our future, not anyone else's.
in the end, what really counts is our realistic opinion of ourselves ...self-respect and self-confidence have everything to do with it; arrogance does not. 'self'-respect cannot come from 'others'. if you can't believe in yourself, i doubt others will.

I am not sure if this answers your question, but I am 31 and starting college in a month for the first time. I didn't go to college the same time as my friends and I regret it. I felt left out. I wish I had started college at your age. I think you are doing fine, and starting college in January will still put you with people in your age group. You are going to be just fine. Best of luck!

Well I'm 18 and I've been going to school since July 10 of this year. I wouldn't mind if I had to go later in the year. It doesn't matter to me. But think of how much money you'll be making by the time you do start school $$ At least you got a job, I'm still looking for one.

I think you are wise to wait....most 18 year olds have no real idea of the career path they want to pursue and spend the first few years of college floundering around, changing majors, etc.
If money is playing a part in your decision to delay entrance - then all the more reason to wait. There will always be situations in which you feel uncomfortable, in life, in your career, etc. Do what is best and right for your situation.

I says that it depends on if you think that it is the "right time" to go to school. My brother worked full-time and went to school full-time. When the time come s to having a family, it will be harder to work and go to school with a family. I say that while you are young, that it may be a good idea to start college now and go for it, then when you get married, explore your options..

The same thing happen to me. Don´t worry you´ll be fine. So what if your friends are a year ahead of you, you´ll see that not everyone finishes at the same time, plus, you´ll get to meet knew people of any age, you´ll see.

You may have some problems cause other students may seem bit childish to you. However I think that when people are about 20-28 the differences are almost invisible!!

Nope because in college you can always catch up, just take a few more classes each semester.
