I think it has. Pakistan has killed and captured many top Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders. And it played a huge role in the arrests of the 24 people in the Uk who were planning on blowing up the airplanes. So why are so many people accusing Pakistan of not seriously fighting terrorism?

Yes and no. Until recently, Pakistan had made it seem like it wasn't coerced into being an ally in the War on Terror. They have let the United States use their intelligence information, and even some of their country to effectively wage war, have publicly broken ties with the Afghan Taliban, captured several Al-Qaeda leaders (among others), and launched a military offensive against fundamentalist Taliban remnants in their Northwest Frontier Provence.

Recently, however, Pakistan has begun doing some unfortunate things. Their "treaty" with militants certainly allows them great freedom to run amok. Pervez Musharraf's statements that Pakistan was forced to be on the US's side doesn't exactly motivate other nations to support their efforts. Plus, intelligence officials in the US believe (they have been wrong before, but are probably right on this one) that Osama, his cohorts and Mullah Omar (the Taliban leader) are hiding somewhere in Pakistan; possibly with the knowledge of the ISI (Pakistan's CIA). Their response to fighting anti-India militants in the disputed Kashmir region has been lackluster at best. Usually that wouldn't be dangerous, but since these militants and Al-Qaeda have been known to work together, it's difficult to say they're not part of the War on Terror.

In the end, Pakistan has lived up to their end of the bargain and have been a relatively good ally thus far. There's still a long way to go in the war, and whether they were a "good" ally in the long term or not is yet to be seen.

Your answering your own question. Pakistan has been both good and not so good. There is only so much they will do. Don't forget Islam is still the most popular religion in Pakistan and their Politics really come in to play. How much power does President Musharraf have. He is now saying he was forced into cooperating with the United States because Richard Armtage told him," if they didn't cooperate, we would bomb the hell out of
Pakistan".

Pakistan is not a nation like the US in that is DOES NOT control all of its territory. One of the first things I remember hearing about Pakistan was that its president could be overthrown ANY minute if he makes a wrong step.

The government cannot control the border region (or states) which are controlled by "war lords" who despise the government and are sympathetic to the Taliban.

I think, with all its handicaps, its done A LOT!!!! Mid Eastern countries don't operate like Western countries AT ALL. It is rich in ancient customs that we can't begin to understand.

This is an unnatural alliance. whatever the Pakistan has done is foolishness. The west will never ever be satisfied with the efforts of Pakistan. American will must attack Pakistan when they Will be free from Iran and other middle east countries, because they want to destroy the power of Muslim world. But they must remember, they will be trapped in a country, that may be Iran or Pakistan as USSR was trapped in Afghanistan and..... finished.

The Pakistani Government stands between us and Osama Bin Ladin. They just recently openly offered amnesty to Him.
During the Clinton Administration the one time Clinton put His pants back on to deal with terrorism Madeline Not-to-Bright allerted the Pakistanis that we would be bombing the Pharmaceutical Warehouse where Bin Ladin was known to be speaking.
Al Quida supporters within Pakistans Government then allerted Bin Ladin to the attack and we lost Him.

Considering the population and history of Pakistan, they actually have done a remarkable job in combating terrorists. Musharraf has done an amazing job to keep the whole thing together and moving forward.

Remember, the terrorists have it in for him, too. Fighting them is a matter of self-preservation, as well as the preservation of the progress Pakistan has made.

It seems for every good Pakistani there seem to be 3 bad ones.

They can't control the lawless regions....needing to make deals with "tribes".

Children are carrying AK-47's, yeah, that's a civilized place. They aren't taught math, science, literature, geography, or world history. All they are taught is the Koran and the Shaira.

Pakistan has helped us as much as they would. They have had to play a very difficult balancing act as most of their citizens are pro al queda.
