Michael Crichton and Stephen King are two huge names in contemporary American fiction. King in particular is very prolific; a lot of his writing is in the horror genre, but by no means all of it.

How about Frank Peretti? I just finished one of his. He writes from a Christian perspective. The one I just finished is called Prophet. It is about a newscaster for a big TV station, his embarrassment of his Christian dad; and also about his relationship with his son. There are other things going on, like a governor's race, and it is interesting. I usually like reading biographies, finishing one on Billy Graham at the moment. Mr. Peretti also wrote one that I read many years ago, it had angels and demons in it but they were unseen by the townspeople. I hope that this helps. Reading is so relaxing.

One of my favorite contemporay authors is Richard Russo. While I have enjoyed all of his novels and short stories I'd strongly recommend Empire Falls to anyone.
