It was definitely "Catcher in the Rye". How do I know this? Because I used to like Mel Gibson movies. In "Conspiracy Theory" his character explains how all well known or serial killers have three names and that a copy of "Catcher in the Rye" is always found in their possessions. ( It's referencing a conspiracy theory that all modern famous killers are trained by the CIA.)
