I have a flowering pear tree that was damaged with a weed whacker. I was wondering why it was not growing like my second one which is now twice the size as the other. Both trees are now three years old. Upon inspection I noticed the tree trunk damage. The damage is around the total of the base of the tree. I now know that I should have had some protection around the base but that is 20 20 hind sight. Thanks for the help!

One tree guard is vinyl kinda like a toilet paper tube but it unwinds to allow placing around the tree-- and best of all-- it expands as the tree trunk grows. However, if the exterior of the tree bark is injured down several layers-- to the part that carries nutrients up to the tree-- you are looking at a dying tree. Check closely-- if you have a master gardner around-- have them check-- if I'm right-- replace the tree now-- save yourself some grief--
good luck

If the trunk is completely girdled, your tree is kaput. Sorry. If it's not girdled, it may recover but it has been severely stressed. Follow the recommendation to buy tree guards for all your young trees. They not only protect against string trimmers, they also keep mice from tunneling under the snow in winter and eating the bark. They can be just as destructive as that trimmer!

It should not have been damaged that much, by a weed wacker. At this point just leave it alone, it should grow out, by itself. You can pick up a tree guard, at your local home depot, or lowes..good luck.
