Back as far as 1933, Fay wray in King Kong, the films were very watchable. A break from reality, in a PLEASANT way. ( I wasn't around in 1933 by the way! lol ) I think everything peaks, has a best period. Todays films have been on the slippery downward slope for some time now, the classic days gone forever I'm afraid. Wouldn't like to say whether the acting was better, but they don't make 'em like Jimmy Cagney any more! :-)

The acting is no better than it is with top actors these days, a film like "To Hell and Back", a personal favourite compares well to todays blockbusters.

But many of todays blockbusters don't compare with the classic oldies.

It's simply a fact that more films are being made these days and the percentage of quality films isnt the same as in the past

I think what makes some of the older films better is the fact that we all lived in more naive and generally gentler times and that gets reflected in the movie making too. These days we are confronted with full on violence and sex where maybe shadows and pauses worked far better to create drama (in my opinion anyway) in older films.

I don't neccessarily agree that the acting was better though. I think some of the old stars could be quite ropey but again that's to do with the film making process not beind so advanced. I give full credit to todays actors for battling away infront of blue screens to create more elaborate effects that really sometimes spoil the film.

Absolutely! Cary Grant was in some early 1930's films with Mae West and Katherine Hepburn which were just at the beginning of "talkies" and the end of the silent screen; Once the talkies began, many famous silent screen stars found themselves out of work because their voices weren't conducive to being "heard"; Also, it was at a time when screenwriters were probably at their best since many unique "ideas"/stories were untapped and not rehashed like they are today! I really wish they'd do a remake of the old "THIN MAN" series which originally starred William Powell and Myrna Loy...good old fashioned mysteries with a witty detective, his wacky heiress wife and a little jack russell terrier named "Asta"...I heard Tom Selleck wanted to redo them years ago...don't know why he didn't; he would've been (and probably still would) be perfect for the role of Nick Charles!

Todays films and stars cannot be compared to those . The acting was so much better, the story plots better. Have we had a movie star with as much charisma as Cary Grant or Bette Davis?????

Well considering I'm a Classic movie buff, Major Barbara Stanwyck and Cary Grant fan. and yes i think for the most part they were better, and in a league by themselves. and they actually had a story line and didn't have to swear every 2 sec. I watch more old movies then anything else. Even the campy stuff have a aura about them that makes it fun to watch.

Not necessarily the acting, but OMG, the atmosphere was so much better! Not a hair was out of place, men wore suits with hats, ladies went to parties in beautiful formal dresses, the comedies were more witty. The only thing I'd have to say I didn't like about the classics is that if anyone ever got shot, THEY NEVER BLED! What was that about?

There are still very good films being made today but of course they are in the minority. However, 2 or 3 really good films a year since those of the 1940's makes a good back catalog.

I don't know if the acting is better or if it is something else. For me the oldies are films of innocence, a different era and a pleasure to watch. Now you can see films on any sibject, nothing is taboo but I prefer to lose myself in "Its a Wonderful Life" and think of the good things in life
