I read up on goldfish and learned they an live more than 20 years but that they grow pretty big and need a lot of oxygen and space. isn't it irresponsible to sell a product made for goldfish that has less than 1 gallon?

well "winter wolf" I feel like a moron because the same store that sold me a goldfish bowl sold me a goldfish book that said that they need 10 gallons per inch. then I went to goldfish web sites (many) that said the myth that they grow only big enough for their tank is a lie, this is them being stunted with brain damage and leads to an early death in the fish. I think 10 gallons for a 1 inch fish is exsessive so I gave my fish to a koi pond owner who laughed at me for getting a bowl. but thanked me for saving the fishs' life.

The many people who said pet stores are in business to make money are right on. What they didn't say, or maybe didn't know, is that the little goldfish will only last so long in a small unfiltered bowl. Soon the poor little guy will get sick and need medication which they will gladly sell you, then they die and you will go back to the store and buy another one and another one and another one.......that's the business they are in!
If the stores actually helped you and told you what you really needed to take care of your fish, the only thing you would buy from them is food. Did you ever notice that all the fish food cans say to feed them 3 times a day? That is so you will buy lots of food. Well, my fish get fed once a day and sometimes I skip a day or two per week. The only fish that need to be fed 3 times a day are fry (baby fish). The fry need a constant supply of high protein food so they can grow to be big healthy fish. Low quality food will not allow them to reach their full potential.

Ever hear of a fish known as a "Carp"? It's just a goldfish that's grown to full size. Goldfish grow in size according to the space available in their environment. The larger the tank... the larger the fish can grow. A small tank or bowl is sufficient for the needs of a goldfish but a goldfish will not outgrow it's tank. Small fishbowls are confining and do not allow the fish to swim nearly as much as they should. They're harder to take care of as well. Small bowls require frequent aeration and the water should be changed regularly thus creating the need for nearly constant attention. A three to five gallon aquarium is sufficiently small enough and large enough to take care of any goldfish and are much easier to maintain for both appearance and cleanliness and make for a much healthier and "happier" home for your pet. If you want your goldfish to grow larger... get a bigger tank.

Didn't you read that book about that goldfish that grew to enormous sizes 'cause the kid fed it too much. With Mr. Karpiac and all?
That's what happens when we give too much for fish.
But good job figuring this out. We've been suppressing that knowledge for years to keep fish from revolting like they did back in, you know, those days...
But maybe you're right. It's time we brought this story to a close! Let's see what those fish can do! Who they think they are! Let's give them their space! HAHA! Goldfish are people too! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'll bet they'll suffocate the moment they reach dry land! HAHAHA!!!
But yes. It is finally time to end the old conflict. I have my ancient hook set. I am ready. Are you?

Because pet stores are in the business to make money and a lot more people will pay a little money for a bowl than a lot of money for an aquarium. Besides, once they have you hooked, there's a good chance you'll come back and buy something larger, more fish and spend more money!

In a small container, goldfish grow slower, also, they will have a much shorter lifespan since the water is much harder to keep clean (the toxins are more concentrated. Take it back, explain the reason, and buy a Betta instead. They can thrive in such a container.

you generally get bigger tanks as the fish gets bigger, I mean... why would you put a new goldfish thats maybe an inch or less long into a 20 gallon tank?

unfortunately, many pet stores are more concerned about money than the welfare of animals. then when people see that the pet store sells the items they assume that its okay to use, but many times pet store products ARE NOT.

It is just like people. We have more comfort in bigger landscapes (like the middle of Iowa where there is miles of no one around) but have the ability to remain alive and living (like in NY city) as long as we have the proper care and shelter to breathe.
