not sure if a border is mandatory between the grass and wall.

I've never heard that and I've seen lots of brick houses and walls with grass growing against them. I would think it would be some help in keeping the ground from drying out, cracking, and damaging the slab.

No , it is very good . Every thing that is green , is good . but we must keep the wall against humidity .

No but if you plant ivy it can destroy your structure.
