I agree with you, and have an opinion. I think that, as we "finessed" the ideal of "freedom", we passed the stopping point, and have approached the ridiculous. It used to be that there were just certain ways one could appear in public. There were certain unwritten rules. Then that was challenged. And it was decided that it was an "infringement" on peoples "rights" to insist that they be dressed a certain way in public. Then it was a further "infringement" to do this, that or the other.

It's a slow degeneration in the name of freedom. I have raised my 21 year old daughter to be modest. Others have not. Why? Because they can get away with it.

I firmly believe in the old adage "Leave something to the imagination"

In my opinion, American culture has lost its modesty. I think, no I believe, it is due to over extension of a Right to Freedom of Speech. We use the first amendment to legalize all sorts of behavior that was not originally intended in the purpose of this freedom. Next, the devaluing of human life negatively impacts modesty. If abortions and executions are accepted, then what else is there to value in a society? Finally, our Civil Rights Movement, with all the positive things that it did, also created a cultural backlash which, when combined with the abuse of the first amendment to our Constitution, more than guards the rights of any sort of minority, but targets the majority and righteous beliefs and behaviors as being ignorance and superstitious. In this environment, why should one be modest? Immodesty then becomes a protected 'right' of a person in artistic expression of him or herself and produces a frenzy of malicious activity and verbiage against anyone who would stand opposed to the immodesty.

Arrogance is a sign of insecurity.
The U.S. is a very insecure nation-made obvious by the majorities choice of government. I say majority because there are many in the U. S. that feel great shame for others choices.
So, modesty and humbleness is a sign of being secure and at peace, and clearly the U.S is neither secure nor at peace.
It is being forced into humility as a result of it not being modest!

modesty is a quality of individual not a crowd....Being American individual often reduce himsef up to being a part of gathering called society. Being part is not being whole...That is why exceptions is rare. Modesty is not an atribute of any society, not just American's. It is rare all over the world...

We've been told for way too long that America "is the best country!" and "God Bless America!" and all this crap. And yes, I think too many Americans are arrogant. I'm ashamed of how my country looks to other countries.

I can almost guarantee you that you'll get a bunch of answers of people saying "because we're the best!"

There's nothing wrong with a little pride, but arrogance is annoying.

American society has attempted to remove the social mechanism from our schools. Non-competitive sports, no grades, and the idea that everyone can do everything prevents children from finding out what they are good at, and sticking to it. Failure builds character, and modesty.
