I got hired by an accounting firm. I was supposed to start work in July. I asked for an extension so that I could study for the CPA exam. The firm gave me the time off I requested. Now, I start in October, and I realize that I still NEED more time to study...I am afraid to ask for another extension of time off because they might get tired and fire me, even before I start. They were already very generous with giving me the extension of time off. Studying for the CPA exam will be harder with my work obligation on top of that...It is very time consuming...I want to start work with a clear mind thinking I passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam before I start....any suggestions for me?

You should have waited til you took your exam before looking for work if you cannot handle both working and studying. It is not fair to make the employer wait any further and yes, they may look at this as irresponsible on your part and let you go. Suck it up! You made this decision and gave them the time line. Stick to it. Simply study at night and on the weekends. You can do it. You should have never accepted a job in the first place when you wanted to "start work with a clear mind when you had passed all 4 parts of the exam". Why then did you do that? Not very considerate and rather selfish on your part. Again YOU made this decision. Suck it up and deal! The employer has been more than fair and accommodating to you! I suggest you return the favor in kind and grow up. It's about commitment and responsibility...not what you want all the time. Haven't you studied enough in the last several months already or have you been blowing the time? Time to cowboy up and step up to the plate. This is the real world.

Also, why have you posted this three times now???

My suggestion? Suck it up and deal with it. The company was already more than generous in giving you the extension that they did. They were under no obligation to do so. Also, I understand that the CPA exam is quite involved and that adequate prep time is needed in order to successfully complete it but at the same time, if you have not been working these past three months on the premise that you have been soley prepping for this exam, why in God's name would you need MORE time? Is it a question of time management, have you just been making excuses to not start work, have you been plain goofing off all this time or are the concepts presented in the exam material so out of your realm of comprehension that no amount of study time is ever going to be adequate for you? You need to get to the root of your hang up.

That having been said, there are plenty of people out there who have taken-and passed-the CPA exam without having had the luxury of taking time off work to study for it. I think you need to reevaluate your situation and decide whether or not you actually want this job because if you ask for another extension, their offer will be withdrawn.

Good luck!

What have you been doing for the last 3 months?!

That is exactly what the company is going to ask you if you request another extension. Start in October and continue your study, you'll just have to get on with it like everyone else. It's called multi tasking.

The company may respect you more in the end if you demonstrate that you can actually do both at the same time.

Sometimes you have to do more than you would like to at one time. I would take the job in October. Yeah you'll have to crunch down, but it won't last forever.
