This is to prove or lose an argument with my mother-in-law.

My MIL wants to pick up my son from my parents' place and take him in her convertible for a 3-hour drive home.

I'm just not comfortable with it. Maybe I'm being overprotective, or maybe I'm being realistic--hence the reason for this question!

Some of you are so hostile! I'm asking for reassurance that I'm not just being paranoid about not allowed my son driving in a convertible!

Not even remotely.

There is limited protection in the case of an impact and NO overhead protection in the event of a rollover.

If the top is town, ANYTHING on the road can hit the child.

Face the child to the rear to avoid wind in his face.
Put sunscreen on his little face, hands and ears and he will be fine.
If convertibles were not as safe as other vehicles IE: accidents they would not be being sold.

Is you MIL willing to put the top up on the convertible if the child seems uncomfortable?
It would also depend on the temperature.
Too hot or too cold outside would be a deciding factor.

Honestly I have a convertible, myself. I would not allow my childeren to ride in it at such a young age with the top down. If the top is up it should be safe. This is considering that you do not have an accident and roll the car over, in which case is not safe for anyone.

No and no. And forget about the women who said she drove her kid in the car and it was fine. If you threw a rock at your kid and missed a couple of times, that doesn't mean it is safe to keep throwing rocks. Too many chances for the baby to get hurt. Why would you want to take the risk? I am guessing I am siding with your mother in law. Oh well, bye bye best answer.

the baby is just as safe in a convertible as any other human being. given that fact the car seat is perfectly secured as required by federal or state laws. however, just to be anal....tie a hat around the baby's head so the ears are covered. and drive carefully.

I don't think it is a good idea, unless they are wearing a hat that covers their ears. Kids get ear infections and earaches so easily that the air may hurt them. Other than that, as long as their car seat is fastened securely it shouldn't be a problem.

to ride in...I don't see why not. I don't think it's too smart...what if you are in an accident...if the child isn't properly strapped in then he / she could fly out of the car. What is the argument about?

No, a rock or other debris could fly up and hit them in the face. Maybe for short trips but even then I feel it is unsafe. ♥

We have a 2.5 mnth old and we have strapped his car seat into the back of our convertible and he was fine. Just shade him (or her) from the sun.

Cheers
