restaurants (preferably not fast food), grocery stores, coffee shops

Depending on the labor laws in your state, fast food is really a great place for teens to work. Fast food has such a negative stigma but it is a great environment for teens. They are working with kids their own age giving them the opportunity to meet new people. They work with the public, teaching them patience and social skill, plus they learn how to really work and get their hands dirty. Plus fast food restaurants are accustomed to working with teens so they are good about work schedules.
If your labor laws keep kids from working until 16, babysitting is also a good way to earn money and learn responsibility, plus nothing is better birth control for a teen than an evening with an unruly child (lol j/k)

I started out at a grocery store whenever I was your age. It is good because it can give you accounting and customer service experience. Also try to get promoted to a cash office within the gocery store after you have been a cashier for a while. That is a great accounting experience that will help you in future careers.

Babysitting! You can set your own rates and if you get to work for someone like me (watching my daughter) you may even get free food, day trips and vacations out of it!

I have also worked in retail for over 5 years and I can tell you- it is a great place to start but not until you're 18. Most retail companies won't hire until a person is 18.

Drug stores are good places to work. They don't mind so much if you take off for school projects or dances, etc...
It is usually slow paced and they don't allow guys to hang out there.

I worked in a Ben Franklin 5 & dime. A very small retail store serving the community they are in.

I'm against fast food. Both of my daughters worked fast food and it was greasy, dirty, smelly work.

good luck

Depending on gender, but either going outside and doing yard-work, cleaning or fixing something or inside doing laundry, cleaning house in general. Make them earn their allowances while learning responsibility which in turn helps them in the future when obtaining a job that will be their bread and butter for their livelihood.

The obvious choices are restaurants or stores. We all had those crappy jobs.

However, you might see if you get get something a little more interesting. For example, we have kids in our neighborhood who started their own lawn-mowing business. It gets them outside, is healthy, and means they have the responsibility to running the business themselves.
