Question-- are they growing in a "micro-climate?"-- meaning are they on the south side of a building or solid fence?-- that much protection will help a lot-- I would heap leaves over them-- if you have some snowfence or any short fencing-- make a round circle big enough-- or two-- or what ever you need-- out a few inches from your tender shoots-- and fill the thing with leaves. In Germany where they have white asparagus-- they cover them with dirt-- you couldl do that also.
The last instructions I read stated to put them in a trench-- pretty deep one-- with lots of "seasoned" manure- aka composted -- as they are heavy feeders. Then fill the trench as they grow-- that may be for later after your "babies" are a year old or so.
Check out the library for organic gardening books or your local library sale-- old ones-- you'll get the straight stuff there.
good luck
