Hey you guys, I just bought a Gateway's Laptop for $700 + tax. It has an AMD Turion 64 processor, 1GB RAM, 120GB Hard Drive, a CD/DVD-RW, with Windows XP Media Center.

You guys think this is a good deal?

You should have bought Dell. Better machine, more features and great buys.

I've had more success with Dell since the laptop that I have which is a Inspiron 1000 is very reliable had it for nearly 3 years now and hasnt had a single maintenance problem so far. $700 is a bit much since mine was only like $540 since it's basic and has internet, but you need to look at your features and price of each thing to see if what you got on it is worth $700. Personally Gateways are crappy computers since I got a desktop and it's a piece of garbage as far as reliability is concerned.

For the fancy bells & whistles (Media Center, 120 GB HD), I think it's a good deal. Although, I'd have spent the same trading off in HD, etc. and got an Athlon 64...But I hear Turions are good too.

It can't run OS X, only Windows and Linux. It requires additional time and money be spent on antivirus and antispyware, a firewall, and it will still be vulnerable. This on the other hand: http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html can run more software because it can run OS X, Linux and Windows, but doesn't require any additional security software unless you run Windows on it. It costs a little more, but it's got TWO processors and better software. In fact, if you check to see if it's 'Vista ready' you'll find that Microsoft's web site rates it highly.

I've seen worse. It's OK, but why Media Center? Media Center is only *really* needed by a few people.

The test of the pudding is in the eating. You'll only know once you've run it through its paces.
Keep a regular maintenance schedule and it'll give you lots of years of service with minimal downtime.
