Your not being rude, but seems to me it's a nice way of saying....prostitute. (in other words, paying someone for escorting you, accompanying you, no necessarily for sexual favors)

Could be any number of people that attend a social function with you. May be a close friend, an aquaintence, a co-worker, a stranger hired from an escort service, might be an arranged meeting with strangers.
