I'm not sure anyone knows the REASON for the other vessel not developing. I have never read of it in any literature. It is just a fluke when it happens. Most of the time. the baby does just as good as one with 3 vessels,, but they will do extra testing to make sure. They will look at the growth of the baby more closely and the heart. Don't worry, it is good if they know these things ahead of time.

Ultra sounds are not totally reliable! The concern with a 2 blood vessel umbilical cord is that it occasionally indicates that there may be abnormal development of the heart. Because of their findings the main thing they will do is try to dopple the babies heart regularly during your pregnancy to make sure it is formed correctly and they will probably try to make sure you deliver during the day when a neonatal heart team is available. If these people are available then on the off chance that the baby does have something wrong with the heart they can whisk him/her right into surgery and fix it usually with a great outcome. The bad scenario is sometimes people ignore the situation and decide to go with a pretty birth center with lots of bells and whistles but no neonatal intensive care unit or surgical team in house. In those situations a sick baby has to be helicoptered to a facility where the surgical team may have to be called in. This can cause an hours delay and causes the inconvenience of you not being in the same hospital as your baby. So listen to your OB's advice! If they got a clear indication that the heart was well formed you're great. If they couldn't get a clear indication because of the baby's wiggles etc don't worry either. Prepare for the worst (by choosing a hospital with a NICU) and be confident that even in the worst case your baby is probably going to do great.

It could be nothing, but your pedi should order a renal ultrasound when the baby is born. A 2 vessel cord is an indicator of possible renal abnormalities. They can be small, or cystic or perfectly normal. I can be that one vessel has just merged into the other. In an umbilical cord there are 2 arteries and one vein. when it is a 2 vessel cord one artery is missing or non developed. There are many many causes, most are nothing to be concern about. Follow your OB and pedi advice.
