The Earth will most likely end in 4 or 5 billion years when the Sun undergoes its red giant phase and swallows Mercury, Venus, and the Earth. It's possible that the Sun's loss of mass prior to this event will actually let Earth escape into a further orbit where it will not be physically engulfed, but its surface would still be ravaged by incredible heat and radiation, effectively ending life on it.

The Earth will end in when the Sun explodes. Life on Earth will end in about 50-100 years when global warming kills us-and when we become to populated to survive (in about 50 years, the population is said to go to 9 billion).

Three possibilities (maybe more):
1. The sun is about 37.5% through its own life. When it dies (in about 10 billion years) so may the earth.
2. As the sun ages, it get stronger. Over time (billions of years) sun rays may become too strong and may overcome the earth's protective magnetic field, creating an inhabitable environment similar to Mars.
3. Over time (billions of years), the earth may get drawn to close to the sun.

Most of the answers that address the life cycle of the sun are correct. However, the extraordinarily accurate Mayan calendar stops dead on December 23, 2012. Personally, I won't be making big holiday plans that year.
