The origins of the phrase are uncertain, with some speculating that it may refer to being out in the open or ready for action. According to Engber many soldiers do go without underwear to increase ventilation and reduce moisture. The earliest known use of the term in print is January 22, 1985 with Jim Spencer writing in the Chicago Tribune: Furthermore, colored briefs are 'sleazy' and going without underwear ('going commando', as they say on campus) is simply gross.

Sounds like "doing without" under ware. I always think of commandos as being very basic and living a life of hardship out in the wild somewhere. So maybe they don't have a washing machine or dryer available for doing laundry.

Going Commando means letting loose, no boundaries, going all out so to speak...the same could be said about not wearing underwear.

When we were in Vietnam, most of us in the field got dysentery, we had the runs for weeks. We did not wear underwear for two reasons: It rubbed between our legs in that hot humid climate, it caused crotch rot and anyway, we had the runs so bad often, on patrol we just let go. Most of us had our pants split in the back. Anywhere in Vietnam you were only yards from a stream, so you walked through it and got clean.

Gross, yes, expedient. That too.

I think this was entirely from the TV series 'Friends'. I had never heard it before then, and it was everywhere afterwards.

I think the idea cames from US soldiers in the Vietnam war who didn't wear underwear to avoid 'crotch rot'.
