The computer is a compaq presario sr1303wm with 256 megs of ram, 40 gig hard drive, windows xp, 250 power supply, and amd sempron cpu chip. I don't know how fast the mother board or computer itself clocks at but I wnted to know how fast of a prossecor chip I can get for it. Im smart with the other components but not the cpu chip itself. I wanted to build a computer so I would know how to build a computer but for now this thing is getting upgraded and wanted to know what my mother board could handle. If you have any ideas please let me know. Thanks a bunch. the most informative gets all 5 starz. thanks a lot again:]

Get the model number from your motherboard. Then go to the mobo manufacturer's site and search for your model. Then look at the specs and it'll tell you the maximum CPU it can handle.

First of all, you can't use a sempron chip for a gaming computer. It's just not powerful enough. The best value and performance are the athlon x2 chips. You also need at least 1 GB of brand name RAM like crucial, kingston, or Corsair. The most important component is the video card. Get a card with at leas 256 MB video ram and 256 bit memory bus. A Ge-Force 7800 or 7900 are probably the best value. You will want at least 120 GB on your hard drive if you are using the computer a lot.

You can build a gaming computer with these components for around $800 if you shop at Newegg or Tigerdirect. Anything less powerful will not be able to handle the newest games with decent image quality.

martin h pretty much covered everything, i just wanted to add that you have to look into the power supply as well. With the components like Martin has listed you will probably need atleast 500 W supply. Also, Pentium Dual Core chips are not bad either, look into those as well.

CPU is important but, no mather how fast your cpu is you must upgrade RAM! Even on 2GHz you can play plenty of good games! Try to buy 1-2Gb of ram! It is the best way! I had the same question, and everybody told me
"UPGRADE YOUR RAM"
it is easier, cheaper, and better then some other components...
Hope i helped....

If I'm right Compaq , like others DELL for example don't build PC's to be upgraded they want you to buy another, so next time, get a shop to build for you !

AND, if you can build and have no idea of upgrades , you've failed your exam !!!!!

That computer has an ASUS A7V8X-LA motherboard. It can take:
Socket A
AMD Athlon XP
Core frequency up to Athlon XP 3200+
