i went to this site: http://www.anywho.com/
and they knew my address and my age and my middle name, how do these sites get this type of information and is it legal?

yes it is legal. public records are available for anyone to search.

it has nothing to do with yahoo or yahoo answers... although yahoo does freely admit to info farming. but unless you have been updating your address and info with them, god only knows what they are telling people.

i've moved a lot, so it's funny to look at these automated sites. they generally provide two or three addresses for me, so i'm not sure how much to worry about it. but it will get more dangerous as records are moved online to be at the mercy of automated searches.

They get it from public records, which everyone has access to. Go to your local courthouse and browse through their files. This same information is also published in the newspapers.

Freedom if Information Act...gotta love it! At least they don't have anything on me. I work real hard at staying just under the radar.

They may get it from yahoo. There was probably some small print somewhere that stated this would be published and like most of us, you didn't read it all, you just clicked on "I accept".
