Because, as much as the conservatives are right about fiscal and foriegn policies, they are also legendary for their intolerance of gays.
Conservatives are opposed to ANY pro-gay legislation, and the democrats are in favor of pro-gay legislation.
Which of those falls in your line of thinking, is your own decision.

Because they are liberal and support the gays, among other things. The conservatives wouldn't have been the ones because they are closed-minded and don't support the "pursuit of happiness" for the gays, which the constitution grants.
