I know it doesn't exactly help when people tell you to just "think of nothing" and "clear your mind"
If you could do, that would be meditation and you wouldn't be asking! But the truth is that you aren't supposed to be thinking of anything in particular. Thoughts may come to you but the idea of medition is to clear the mind and have it free from thought.

It will take maybe a month of practicing meditating every day (about 15 mins to up to an hour) until you start to feel something. It's hard to explain but once you get used to it and stop waiting and expecting something to happen, things will happen and you'll start to enjoy meditating.

Experiment with different positions. Don't worry about the position, or your breathing, or where your legs are folded if at all. None of that is really important at the start. You just need to be sitting comfortably. Although if you have bad posture then sitting up straight for a while will feel awkward. Don't worry though, you will get used to that fairly quick too as you'll get stronger by doing the same thing every day.

Make sure you do it at a time when you won't be disturbed.
Some things could be hindering your progress like if you're worried someone will walk in on you doing it. Go into a room that you can lock or put something in front of the door. Close curtains if you have to. This time is supposed to be all about you.

Don't do it if you need to be stopping it soon as the whole time you'll probably be wondering how long you've been sitting there for and how long is til you need to leave. Like don't put something in the oven that takes 30 minutes and say okay i'll do it while i'm waiting on my food. Unplug/switch off phones if need be.
In the back of your mind you'll be thinking about these things which can distract you.

Like the others have suggested maybe you could put some relaxing music on low so as to have something to focus on. Or imagine yourself fading and turning into air or your body floating up into the sky through the clouds.
Just try to relax as best you can. If you have any thoughts don't worry just try to shake them from your mind by focussing on the music or imaging yourself floating again.

Meditation has been used in every part of the world. The styles, systems, or types of meditation may go by different names, and they may be taught by a wide range of schools, traditions, teachers, lineages, religions, or paths, but the primary underlying discrimination between them is the nature of that focal point.
Another type of meditation is insight meditation (mindfulness), known as Vipassana in the Buddhist Tradition. Insight Meditation belongs to a comprehensive body of teachings known as the Dharma. The Dharma embraces ethics, spiritual inquiry, and contact with like-minded people, compassion, wisdom and an enlightened life.
So if you want to meditate then begin by getting to a quiet place, get in a comfortable position, make sure you’re comfortable – then close your eyes and just start relaxing – take a few deep breaths – let them out slowly – let your mind drift for a few seconds. As you proceed – your breaths will become regular – and then begin focusing on your breath. Pay attention to your breath – as you continue your mind will want to drift – when it does this – gently begin focusing on your breath.

I actually just do the breathing exercises and whilst I am breathing I think about how the breath is going into my lungs and out again. Meditation isnt necessarily about clearing ones mind of all thoughts, sometimes it can be good to focus on the one thought of breathing and through this process one comes to meditate ie "clear the mind and relaxation" There are also techniques to do with total body relation where the person lies on the floor and imagines each other their body part relaxing starting from the big toe and working upwards.
I hope this helps for a start! =)

That's a hard question, isn't it? I've been trying to develop a meditation practice, but I don't get very far.

There are tons of ways to meditate, and tons of reasons. You really just have to decide what you want to get out of it, and then pick a method. Closing your eyes and pointing might be as good a method as any other!

I want to do it to increase my concentration, which in turn will boost my psychic abilities. And creating peace and a quiet mind wouldn't completely suck either.

I suggest starting with this method. Counting breaths. What you do is sit in a comfy position and close your eyes. Begin counting from 1-10. As soon as you become aware that your mind has wandered, start over. It's normal to get only as high as 2 before your mind wanders, and to get as high as 3-4 before you realize it. Just keep doing this over and over; eventually you'll gain better control of your mind, and you'll find that this time spent NOT thinking will be very refreshing.

Zazen is the practice of thinking of nothing. It's very difficult. You can certainly attempt that - but I think you'd want to have at least one thing in your mind. The key is to avoid conscious thinking - you can do something like look at a pretty picture, then try to hold that picture in your mind. Avoid actually forming thoughts about it - just keep the picture in your head.

It is very hard to meditate. You are suppose to ignore the thoughts that come into your mind. Just let them flow without judgment. I was told that it gets easier over time, I never stuck with it.

From what I know I think you are not supposed to think about anything. Your mind is to be completely clear which is very difficult to do.
