I don't think so..especially if neither had a brother growing up or a Dad. It is important for the 21 yr. old to set a great example and be very responsible...
My brother had a friend that was older, he was a member of a club my brother went too. He was my brother's best man and they are still great friends 25 yrs. later. Look at the Big Brothers Big Sister's club of America....there's a reason why it is still going strong and important.

The man who is 21 must be extremely immature to be friends with a 16 year old. At least friends in the sense of hanging out together, which I assume you mean.
Age gaps as people mature are less important. Say a 30 year old being friends with a 22 year old. By 22 one might expect maturity sufficient enough to make a friendship viable with a 30 year old. But 16 year olds are still children in so many ways. They haven't had life experience as an adult yet.
It seems inappropriate to me, and if I were the parent of the 16 year old I would severely question the maturity of the 21 year old. After all, if a 21 year old is immature enough to be hanging out with teenagers, but can still buy liquor - what sort of boundary are they even going to acknowledge when it comes to drinking or partying? That's only one of many questions this raises.

Provided you set certain boundries and rules, as well as remember he is just a boy, not a young adult, and almost adult, or anything close to being an adult, but then neither are you. Male don't reach that point until age 30, compared to age 24 for females. The only reason you are declared adults at age 18 is you can be drafted. They draft you at that age because you use efficient use of energy and oxygen, and because your brain is still so must mush that they can more easily manipulate you into killing another human being. Killing is a learned behavior, not natural to humans.
Your roll shoudl be that of a big brother, but not one who can buy him alcohol or cigarettes.

Yes, I think that's weird. Anybody can be friends, but without knowing the 21 year old, I would say he is in a small town, didn't go to college and has a problem socializing with others his age.

Depends on a lot of things, but sometimes people can mature much faster than others. It wouldn't be strange for a 23yr old and a 28yr old to be friends.
