Limewire itself is not illegal. If you do one of the following things, then it becomes illegal:
i) Share your copyrighted material (Music, Videos)
ii) Download copyrighted material, which you have not bought.
If, say you own a copy of Moulin Rouge, then you CAN download it off limewire, as you already own the copyright (This is not always the case, in some cases you buy just one licence.)
Although downloading copyrighted material IS illegal, it is not AS illegal as people downloading the music and selling it. The risk is so small that many people feel that is a risk they are willing to take.
In December a new LEGAL music download site will open, where you can download music legally, and for free. See spiralfrog.com

Umm, Why yes, It is illegal. This is news to you? Limewire itself is not illegal, the people sharing their software/music are committing illegal acts. The people downloading those files are guilty of Theft. (My personal opinion is that most of these people are simply guilty of being too poor to afford the crap.)
However If you already have the CD or Cassette, then I believe Downloading them to have a copy on the computer would not be construed as illegal. As long as you bought and paid for it at one time.

Is taping a favorite TV show illegal?
How about taping off the radio?
The answer is no and no. If your downloading with the purpose of making profits off of it...then yes it's wrong. Some people download to make bootleg copies, then try to sell them on Ebay...now that's illegal. Just like some people record TV shows, edit out the commercials, and try to sell it. BUT, if you download for your own personal use, it's not illegal. I've been downloading for years and nobody has come after me for it....but then, I haven't been doing anything illegal...so they've had no reason to.
~Happy Downloading~
~Oh yea, don't share...that leads to viruses.
It's not the product's fault...it's the user's for not paying attention to what he/she is doing. ~

I am unsure of its legality. However, there needs to be a lawsuit against limewire for allowing so many viruses to leak onto other user's computers. I have heard of so many people who use limewire who acquired a virus. If one does not know, if they send files or documents to other people (who are unaffected), this will allow for other receivers to become infected and the cycle goes on and on. It will never start.

Yes and no. If you are taking copyrighted information (music, progams, or vides) than yes. It is illegal to "share" the information.
