He wanted to know how to kill Harry. The little he had heard about it made him think that it gave some sort of option. (Not "Harry will kill Voldemort", but "one will kill the other with a candlestick.") He wanted to be the one to use it to get Harry, especially if Harry didn't know about it.

Obviously, he knows of its existence, but not its content...being the control-freak he is, he cannot abide someone knowing something about him he doesn't know himself.
